Nicole Zhang
Zhang’s practice centres on genre painting and its potential to capture the complexities of everyday life. Through composition, patterning, symbols and motifs, Zhang captures the familiar rhythms and disruptions of our daily rituals. She employs humour in her works, referencing tragicomic figures to playfully navigate the prosaic absurdity of the ordinary, whilst narrative storytelling techniques with strong threads of care and connection suggest an almost sacred significance.
Nicole completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at UNSW Art & Design in 2022, and was selected for the 2023 Hatched: National Graduate Show at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. She was awarded a Summer Residency at Sydenham International 2023 - 2024, and has this year been selected as a finalist in the 68th Blake Prize at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.
Nicole’s Art Incubator solo exhibition will be hosted in collaboration with CBD Gallery.
