Philjames

In reimagining and re-presenting historical painting and sculptural forms, Philjames generates a sense both of the familiar and the uncomfortable through the displacement of notions of time, place and history combined with seemingly seamless interweaving of somewhat obscured pop cultural references. This combination serves to evoke a sense of 'uchronia'-a term from science fiction describing uncanny alternative history.

Philjames received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) from The National Art School, Sydney in 2002. He has been a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, the Dobell Prize for Drawing, The Blake Prize, The John Fries Memorial Prize, The Kings Art Award, and the Sir John Sulman Prize. Philjames was the winner of the 2020 Waverley Art Prize. He is represented by Olsen Gallery in Sydney which hosted his 2020 solo show One Fine Day. He is also represented by Nicholas Thompson Gallery, Melbourne.
